You just posted a really clever comment/joke/photo/video on social media, and you are ready for the world to sing your praise. So you wait for the notifications to roll in, telling you that 25, 50, 100 people liked your post.
We like to be “liked”, so we are in constant pursuit of things that will promise this recognition. Our self-worth has somehow become tied to the number of likes we receive. If we don’t receive a lot of recognition, then we aren’t very funny, clever, heartfelt, provocative, etc. We aren’t very likable.
We keep trying to prove our worth to others and to ourselves through social media when our self-worth should really come from a more sustainable source: from within ourselves.
